Fully-guided photographic adventure

Yangshuo

Hong Kong

Is this for me?

YES if you are:

  • A lover of beauty, travel and photography, keen to learn about new photography opportunities, tips and tricks and be guided to spectacular locations to create long-lasting images while enjoying the company of like-minded people
  • Excited about the opportunity to travel to authentic China and mesmerising Hong Kong and be immersed in authentic lifestyle and culture, in the safe knowledge that you are fully supported
  • Looking for a small group (minimum of 5, maximum of 10) where everyone is given individual attention and as much photography tuition and advice as you want from 2 experienced professional UK photographers

Details

Where will we go?

We are covering two fantastic and very photogenic locations:

  • Yangshuo, and surrounding areas, with its beautiful rivers, astonishing karst mountain scenery and street photography opportunities at every step; and
  • Hong Kong, where East meets West, one of the most fascinating and visited cities in the world, with bustling markets, breathtaking nightscapes, architecture and again – street photography aplenty!

Yangshuo

“Guilin has the best scenery under the heaven, but Yangshuo is even more beautiful.” Yangshuo lies at the confluence of the Li and Yulong rivers, which form part of a waterway system that connects the Yangtze with the Pearl River Delta. Situated in the Guangxi province, Yangshuo and neighbouring Xing Ping are home to amazing scenery where majestic karst mountains emerge from rivers and are famous for iconic images such as cormorant fishermen or the print on the 20-yuan note!

For the first part of our trip, we will stay in Yangshuo and have day trips to the ancient village of Xing Ping and other photogenic locations along the Li and Yulong rivers. In addition to spectacular landscapes, there are infinite opportunities for street and people photography.

Hong Kong

East and West, old and new, rich and poor, modern and traditional, Hong Kong really has it all and you’re in for a treat when it comes to photography and not only! From breathtaking views up Victoria Peak to nightscapes and light shows from Tsim Sha Tsui, street photography in traditional bustling street markets and old fashioned trams, vertigo-inducing high-rise buildings, this is as diverse as it gets when it comes to photography opportunities and we will be there to help you capture it in the best possible way.

We will spend a busy 4 days in this amazing place taking full advantage of all the photography opportunities Hong Kong affords, from street photography in authentic markets and arty neighbourhoods to night photography, architecture and cityscapes.

When are we going?

2019: Our next tour dates are 22nd October (start in Guilin) to 30th October (finish in Hong Kong).

If you are looking for a longer mainland China experience, you can also join us for the ZhangJiaJie and FengHuang trip which runs from 12th-21st October. Contact us for details and an inclusive price for both tours.

  • All transfers to and from hotels / airport / stations during the trip
  • All transport as required while on the tour
  • Breakfasts and some meals during the tour as stated
  • Group and individual photography instruction, reviews and feedback by Matt and Andreea of Light and Imagination UK.

What can I expect in terms of photography tuition?

Each day, Matt and Andreea, experienced UK photographers and founders of Light and Imagination, will be offering individual and group advice tailored to the needs of the group (which will be assessed during pre-trip consultations and on Day 1 of the tour).

We will run short workshops or 1:1 sessions to teach you various techniques and how to use certain equipment. These will be brief and mostly on-location, so we make the most of our time in China and Hong Kong – they will also be relevant to the shooting opportunity presented to us on that day.

We will offer as much or as little tuition and advice as you want so the tour caters for all levels of experience. All workshops, tips and tricks or feedback sessions are of course entirely optional – it’s not a boot camp!

We will always be available to help you with your shots and camera through the day on all days except any free time as stated in the itinerary. You can just ask Matt and Andreea for help on an ad-hoc basis or schedule individual sessions that provide more focussed opportunities to review your work or receive advice on anything you’re struggling with.

Further guidance and tuition will be made available at suitable points, as below, to help you with post-production and editing. Please note that we will only support Lightroom for post-production help.

What can I expect on the ground?

Accommodation:

All the accommodation we book is at Western standards and all rooms are private, en-suite, and there are no single supplements! In Yangshuo, we are staying at a small independent hotel which is just by the river, enjoying a quiet location, but still within walking distance to all the restaurants and bars of bustling Yangshuo. In Hong Kong, we are staying in a fantastic hotel within easy reach of all our proposed photographic destinations.

The price assumes single room occupancy therefore there will be no single supplement to be paid on top of the advertised tour price. If you are traveling as a couple of two friends we have a room-sharing discount available for you.

Meals:

Both Yangshuo and Hong Kong cater for a wide range of tastes and dietary requirements, and there will be English versions of menus in the most popular places.

Equally, we will do our best to work with any food intolerances or special diets you may be restricted by, however bear in mind that in some locations especially whilst we are in mainland China it might be difficult to accommodate some strict diet requirements e.g. strict vegan. Please speak to us to ensure we can cater for your needs.

Physical activity level:

There will be a lot of walking involved on most days, as well as some stairs to climb while for example attempting the sunrise shot in Yangshuo. However, as there are two professional photographers and tour leads, we are able too split the group so everyone gets an amazing experience regardless of fitness levels. If you have any mobility or health concerns please do speak to us to ensure you will be able to safely enjoy the trip.

Weather:

Autumn is one of the best times to visit Yangshuo as the weather is dry and still warm but not hot, and the colours are beautiful. Except lows of 18°C (64°F) to highs of 26°C (78°F). In Hong Kong, the weather is very pleasant with clear skies, constant warmth and more sunshine hours than September. The average low and high temperatures are 23 °C (73 °F) and 28 °C (82 °F).

 What to bring:

Photographic equipment: Camera(s), Batteries, Chargers, Travel adaptors (suitable for China), Lenses, Tripod, Filters, Flashes (if you have them and want to use them), Memory Cards, Laptop for back up and editing, ideally with Lightroom installed if you wish to take part in the Lightroom workshop. A sturdy camera bag, preferably a rucksack and not a trolley case for the days we are out and about.

Medication and essentials: Please ensure you bring any medication you require, plus we recommend having a small personal medical kit containing essentials.

Clothing and footwear: Pack suitable clothes for a hot, possibly rainy, summer day with cooler mornings and evenings. As we will be walking a lot, comfortable walking shoes are a must, as are rainproof clothes (and covers for your equipment) but also sun protection.

Once you decide to book your trip, we will provide a consultation to facilitate planning and packing!

Price per Person:

ONLY £2750 (solo traveler price, NO single supplements)
Deposit – £750 to secure your place

We offer discounts for couples / photographers traveling together and sharing a room. Great discounts for accompanying non-participant partners too! Just email us for more information!

The contract for the provision of that activity will be between you and the activity provider.

  1. Claims & complaints

If you have a complaint about your trip please inform your tour leader at the time in order that they can attempt to rectify the matter. If satisfaction is not reached through these means then any further complaint should be put in writing to us within 30 days of the end of the tour.

  1. Severability

In the event that any term or condition contained in these Booking Conditions is unenforceable or void by operation of law or as being against public policy or for any other reason, then such term or condition shall be deemed to be severed from this contract or amended accordingly only to such extent necessary to allow all remaining terms and conditions to survive and continue as binding.

  1. Privacy policy

Any personal information that we collect about you may be used for any purpose associated with the operation of a trip or to send you marketing material in relation to our events and special offers. Full Itinerary

You will arrive at Guilin airport where we will meet and collect you. Airport to hotel transfer is included and will take about 1.5 hours (don’t worry! It will be a people carrier and not what this lovely gentleman is riding).

In the evening we will have an introduction meeting where you will meet other participants and we can discuss where you’re at with your photography, what are your aims for this trip and how we can best support you achieve your goals.

After breakfast at the hotel we will head towards the ancient village of Xingping where we will practice some street photography and also photograph the iconic karst mountain river scenery depicted on the 20 Yuan note.

In the evening you have the option of experiencing a cormorant fishing event and try a little low-light photography.

There’s a short trek to the top, but you can’t beat these views from Xianggong mountain. We will aim to be there for sunrise if the weather allows, and spend a little time practicing landscape and panoramic photography.

We continue the day with some street photography and then in the evening we will treat everyone to a spectacular show Impressions Sanjie Liu, set against the karst mountains backdrop and involving beautiful choreographed 600 performers and incredible light show.

In the morning we will hold a group review and feedback session and have a look at everyone’s captures from the past couple of days. Of course this is entirely optional and you can decide to go for a stroll in town or buy some souvenirs before we leave for Hong Kong on the following day.

This afternoon we will explore and photograph more of the neighbouring Yangshuo scenery and, if the weather is with us, we will do some sunset photography.

After a leisurely morning (unless you want to catch a last sunrise over the river from our hotel!), breakfast at the hotel and final bit of packing, we’re setting off to our next destination.

Hong Kong, here we come! The ride to Guilin airport is around 1.5 hours and we can grab a bite to eat before we board, then it’s a short flight (1.5 hours) followed by a comfortable transfer from Hong Kong Airport to our hotel where we expect to arrive in the evening. Depending on arrival time and everyone’s energy levels we can go back out for a bite to eat and a drink or you can just unpack and chill at the hotel.

Today we will start with the Harbour and the Central area, where we will stop for traditional dim-sum in our favourite place in Hong Kong.

In the evening, we will head up to Victoria Peak and if the weather is on our side, stop there to do sunset and then nightscape photography.

Breakfast at the hotel will be followed by heading to some of HK’s more traditional markets which will offer plenty of opportunities for street photography.

This evening we will head to Kowloon on the famous Star Ferry and admire the light show on Hong Kong Island from Tsim Sha Tsui. Of course, the main opportunity here will be to leave with some stunning nightscapes.

Today we will also be visiting one of Hong Kong’s temples, nestled amongst high-rise buildings but still affording an oasis of calm and peace and some beautiful photographic opportunities. We also have the opportunity to go to Kowloon Park and photograph the majestic flamingos while getting away from the hustle and bustle for an hour or so.

In the evening we are treating everyone to a celebratory meal to mark the end of our trip.

Until the next one! Today it’s departure time so we will have breakfast then check out of our hotel and for those with an evening flight, with most airlines you will have the opportunity to take advantage of the in-town check in at Central Station, then you can enjoy the rest of the day traveling light (well, only as much as your photography equipment will allow!). We will be happy to ‘hang around’ all day with this of you with an evening flight.
