Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

Is this for me?

YES if you are:

  • A lover of beauty, travel and photography, keen to learn about new photography opportunities, tips and tricks and be guided to spectacular locations to create long-lasting images while enjoying the company of like-minded people
  • Looking for a small group (maximum of 10) where everyone is given individual attention, guidance and tuition.

Details

Where will we go?

We are covering two fantastic countries and very photogenic locations in South-East Asia:

  • Siem Reap in Cambodia, the gateway to the Angkor region, a must-go destination for its rich cultural and historic heritage; and
  • Luang Prabang in Laos, a UNESCO world heritage site and arguably one of the most beautiful spots in South-East Asia.

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Siem Reap is the gateway to the Angkor region. Its proximity to Angkor and the temples make it a must-go destination, but Siem Reap has much more to offer than temples, and there will be ample opportunity to experience and photograph local life and culture, with many opportunities for street and reportage photography.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

There are many amazing temples that we will visit and photograph, including the famous Ta Prohm. If you like movies, you will recognise this stunning temple from the Tomb Raider movies. With whole areas and ruins overtaken by trees Ta Prohm looks as though it is being reclaimed by nature, making this temple unique among the others near Siem Reap.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

This region has a rich cultural heritage that goes beyond its famous temples. You will get a glimpse of it during the classic traditional Apsara dance show, which is included in our holiday, with dinner on day 2. This is an opportunity to experience a traditional show but also good photo opportunities at the end when the dancers pose on stage.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

Luang Prabang, Laos

Luang Prabang sits at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers and is considered by many travel writers as being the heart of Laotian culture. This picturesque town is home to no less than 33 Wats (temples). Rituals such as the morning Buddhist monk alms giving procession, its night markets, river sunsets, sunrises and nearby spectacular waterfalls mean that we are spoilt for choice when it comes to photography opportunities.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

One of the most beautiful spots in the vicinity of Luang Prabang, Kuang Si Waterfall. This is the biggest in the area with three tiers leading to a 50-metre drop into spectacular turquoise pools before flowing downstream. We will be spending the best part of a day here after a boat trip on the Mekong River. Needless to say there will be quite a few photographic opportunities here.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

We will be staying in a hotel that overlooks Nam Khan River and is within walking distance of all local eateries, and the famous Night Market, a symphony of colour, sounds and appetising aromas of street food. We will treat you to dinner like a local here to sample authentic delicacies one fine warm evening!

What can I expect in terms of photography tuition?

Each day, Matt and Andreea, experienced UK photographers and founders of Light and Imagination, will be offering individual and group advice tailored to the needs of the group (which will be assessed during pre-trip consultations and on Day 1 of the tour).

We will run short workshops or 1:1 sessions to teach you various techniques and how to use certain equipment. These will be brief and mostly on-location, so we make the most of our time in Siem Reap and Luang Prabang – they will also be relevant to the shooting opportunity presented to us on the day.

We will offer as much or as little tuition and advice as you want so the tour caters for all levels of experience. All workshops, tips and tricks or feedback sessions are of course entirely optional – it’s not a boot camp! We will always be available to help you with your shots and camera through the day on all days except any free time as stated in the itinerary. You can just ask Matt and Andreea for help on an ad-hoc basis or schedule individual sessions that provide more focussed opportunities to review your work or receive advice on anything you’re struggling with.

Where will we go?

Our holiday will take place in Siem Reap, Camobodia, and Luang Prabang, Laos.

Siem Reap is the gateway to the Angkor region. Its proximity to Angkor and the temples make it a must-go destination, but Siem Reap has much more to offer than temples, and there will be ample opportunity to experience and photograph local life and culture, with many opportunities for street and reportage photography. Please see our detailed day-by-day itinerary for details of what we will cover during this trip.

We will continue to the northern Laos ancient town of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Southeast Asia, Luang Prabang sits at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers and is considered by many travel writers as being the heart of Laotian culture. This picturesque town is home to no less than 33 Wats (temples). Rituals such as the morning Buddhist monk alms giving procession, its night markets, river sunsets, sunrises and nearby spectacular waterfalls mean that we are spoilt for choice when it comes to photography opportunities. Please consult our detailed day-by-day itinerary for details of what we will cover during this trip.

What can I expect on the ground?

Accommodation:

We will be staying at a fabulous 5-star hotel and spa in Siem Reap’s Old French Quarter, a 10-minute walk from Pub Street, Old Market and the Angkor Night Market. Featuring traditional Cambodian décor, guests enjoy access to the outdoor saltwater pool, spa baths, sauna/steam room and fitness centre.

Then in Luang Prabang we will be in a fantastic location overlooking Nam Khan River and just a few steps away from the busy crowds making sure peace a quiet are enjoyed as well, our hotel is close to everything within walking distance. Featuring elegant, simple and traditional Lao decor and furniture, we have all the modern mod-cons too, with en-suite non-smoking guest rooms, an on-site restaurant and free Wi-Fi, which is available throughout the hotel. The rooms are fitted with hardwood flooring, air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV, a minibar and electric kettle.

Our price is based on single room occupancy therefore there will be no single supplement to be paid on top of the advertised tour price. The advertised price also includes all local taxes and fees, so again, no extras or hidden costs!

Meals:

Included in the tour price is breakfast at the hotel, as well as the dinner with traditional Apsara dance show on Day 2 and informal street food dinner at the night market on Day 7. Other meals are not included in the price but we will be dining together (if you wish!) for the majority of the tour. We are spoiled for choice in this location, with a variety of local and international dishes available, as well as traditional and modern Khmer cuisine. Our hotel is within walking distance of Pub Street and the Old Market, which host the great majority of local eateries.

Physical activity level:

There will be some walking involved when we visit the temples as well as stairs to climb at a couple of locations, however getting about in between locations will be done via air-conditioned cars or traditional ‘tuk-tuk’s. As there are two photographers on the trip, we have the flexibility of splitting the group if necessary (see daily itinerary options where applicable), so we can tailor the level of physical activity as needed. If you have any mobility or health concerns please do speak to us to ensure you will be able to safely enjoy the trip.

 Weather:

May is a great month to visit Siem Reap and Laos, as temperatures are still high (average 29°C) but it’s less humid than during previous months – with the rainy season beginning later in the month. The crowds will be significantly thinner at the temples and the likely occasional short showers in the afternoon will afford spectacular photo opportunities before and afterwards! Expect hot weather so make sure you bring adequate clothing, footwear and sun protection.

What to bring:

Photographic equipment: Camera(s), Batteries, Chargers, Travel adaptors (suitable for Cambodia and Laos), Lenses, Tripod, Filters, Flashes (if you have them and want to use them), Memory Cards, Laptop for back up and editing, ideally with Lightroom installed if you wish to receive any Lightroom editing tuition or feedback during the trip. A sturdy camera bag, preferably a rucksack and not a trolley case for the days we are out and about.

Medication and essentials: Please ensure you bring any medication you require, plus we recommend having a small personal medical kit containing essentials.

Clothing and footwear: Pack suitable clothes for a hot, possibly rainy, summer day with cooler mornings and evenings. As we may be walking a lot, comfortable walking shoes are a must, as are rainproof clothes (and covers for your equipment) but also sun protection.

Once you decide to book your trip, we will provide a consultation to facilitate planning and packing!

Full Itinerary

Day 1: Siem Reap

You will arrive at the hotel via the complimentary shuttle service (or just make your way to the hotel if you’re already in Cambodia) and we will greet you at the hotel. Once you are settled in your room and had a chance to unpack, we host an introduction meeting in the afternoon, by the pool. We recognise that the group will be at different levels and skills. On this afternoon we can discuss what level you are at with your Photography. This will enable us to work out how much / what type of support you will need to make the most from this trip.

In the evening we will take a stroll through the lively and colourful Siem Reap’s Old Town with plenty of opportunities for street photographs, and have dinner together in one of the places around Psar Chaa – the Old Market. This will give us an opportunity to get to know each other a little and talk about the rest of the trip.

Day 2: Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Bayon

The most popular tourist attraction around Siem Reap is the Angkor Wat temple. Considered the 7th wonder of the world, the Angkor Wat temple is astonishingly well preserved. It is the largest religious monument in the world and when visiting, you cannot help but be awe struck by its majesty. In close proximity is Angkor Thom including Bayon, famous for its huge carved smiling faces. We will be spending the entire day visiting and photographing these locations, including optional sunrise visit to catch the sun rising behind Angkor Wat.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

In the evening we will return to the hotel and you can relax with a well-deserved dip in the saltwater pool! This evening we will be attending a traditional Apsara dance show, which includes dinner, at a nearby location. An opportunity to experience a traditional show but also good photo opportunities at the end when the dancers pose on stage, cold beers or fruit juices and a rich dinner buffet, a perfect way to end a packed day! Dinner and show are included in the trip price.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

Day 3: The lost temple of Beng Mealea and floating village of Kompong Phluk

Today we will be taking a trip a little further away from Siem Reap (about 30 min drive, air-conditioned transport included). Our first stop will be at the lost temple in the lush jungle, Beng Mealea meaning “Lake of the lotus”, dating from the 12th century. We will continue our day with a visit to Kompong Phluk, meaning “Harbor of the tusks”, a small village located at the edge of Tonle Sap Lake about 25 km from central Siem Reap. It is a famous tourist attraction with its flooded mangrove forest accessible by boat, affording more spectacular photo opportunities!

Our boat adventure will continue with visiting stilt houses and watching local fishermen go about their daily activities. We will end our boat trip at Tonle Sap, the largest lake in South East Asia and an ecological hot spot that was designated as a UNESCO biosphere in 1997. Throughout the day Matt and Andreea will guide you through photo opportunities available and offer as much tuition, support and feedback as you need.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

Day 4: The temples of Ta Prohm and Banteay Kdei

Another amazing temple that is right near Siem Reap is the Ta Prohm. If you like movies, you will recognise this stunning temple from the Tomb Raider movies. With whole areas and ruins overtaken by trees Ta Prohm looks as though it is being reclaimed by nature, making this temple unique among the others near Siem Reap. In the afternoon we will continue with visiting Banteay Kdei, meaning “A Citadel of Chambers”, also known as “Citadel of Monks’ cells”, another history-filled location affording beautiful photographic opportunities throughout, especially in the sunset, by the “The royal bathing pool” adjacent to the temple.

As this is our last evening in Siem Reap, it wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Night Market. Opening every evening at sunset the night market is a popular place to pick up a bargain. An area filled to the brim with stalls, handicrafts and Cambodian souvenirs, this is the place to get some gifts and of course a lovely and colourful setting for some more photographs.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

Day 5: Siem Reap

This morning after breakfast you have the opportunity to have feedback and review sessions with Matt and Andreea – these can be organised either as individual or group sessions. The aim will be to look at photographs taken during the trip and review these, giving tips for further editing / improvement for the future as desired. Of course, this is entirely optional and you can choose to spend the morning by the pool, exploring some more of Siem Reap or just chilling before our trip to Laos the following day. As there are 2 trainers available, we can always split the group depending on everyone’s preference. This is something we can decide the night before.

Afternoon is free time and you can spend it buying your souvenirs, packing, chilling by the pool or visiting other sites as desired.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

Day 6: Luang Prabang

We will all transfer to the airport together and fly into Luang Prabang airport, then transfer to the hotel (included in the price). Once you are settled in your room and had a chance to unpack, we host an introduction meeting in the afternoon. We recognise that the group will be at different levels and skills. On this afternoon we can discuss what level you are at with your Photography. This will enable us to work out how much / what type of support you will need to make the most from this trip.

In the evening we will take a stroll through the beautiful centre of Luang Prabang and then stop to get dinner in one of the many outdoor places available by the Mekong River, which means we can watch the sun go down! This will give us an opportunity to get to know each other a little and talk about the rest of the trip.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

Day 7: Wat Xieng Thong, Mount Phousi / Bamboo Bridge and the Night Market

In the morning, we will have breakfast together and then head to Wat Xieng Thong, one of the most renowned Buddhist temples in Luang Prabang. A symbol of great historic importance, this magnificent masterpiece is characteristic of the Luang Prabang style and features an elaborate tree of life mosaic, intricately carved walls, rare Buddhist deities and a 12-metre high funeral carriage. Also known as the ‘Golden Tree Monastery’, Wat Xieng Thong acts as a gateway to Luang Prabang as it is strategically situated close to where the Mekong joins the Nam Khan River.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

We will break for lunch and then meet up again in the afternoon when we will have two options: climb up the stairs on Mount Phousi, home to more temples and rising 150m above the ground, affording panoramic views over Luang Prabang and the two rivers; or walk around Luang Prabang enriching your street photography portfolio and visiting some other sites such as the bamboo bridge over Nam Khan river etc. With two professional photographers there to guide you and be on point for any photographic advice you might need, we can run both these options in parallel if there is interest.

In the evening we will reconvene at the Night Market where we can taste delicious street food and have a go at night photography and capturing the amazing colours and sites of this established Luang Prabang evening pastime.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

Day 8: Alms Giving Ritual, Kuang Si Waterfalls and Butterfly Park

It’s an early start for everyone today, but all worth it! Luang Prabang is the perfect place to see one of the most sacred Lao traditions, the Buddhist Alms Giving Ceremony. Alms giving takes place daily as the sun rises, beginning on the main street of Luang Prabang before spreading out to all the side streets. Despite being a highly revered ritual for locals, visitors are encouraged to be involved as long as a level of respect is maintained throughout. We will advise you beforehand of dos and don’ts as well as give you tips for best photographic captures, while maintaining decorum throughout.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

After breakfast we will be traveling by private transport (included in your price) to one of the most beautiful spots in the vicinity of Luang Prabang, Kuang Si Waterfall. This is the biggest in the area with three tiers leading to a 50-metre drop into spectacular turquoise pools before flowing downstream. Needless to say there are a few photographic opportunities here including photographing the waterfalls and surrounding stunning natural setting. Bring your swimming costume if so inclined, as the pools are perfect for a dip! While here we will also be visiting the nearby Kuang Si Butterfly Park, admiring and photographing butterflies and plants typical to this beautiful region. We will return to Luang Prabang then it’s free time to enjoy a lazy evening by the river watching the sun go down.

Photography Holiday Tour Adventure

Day 9: Mekong River and Pak Ou Caves

Today we will be taking another trip a little further away from Luang Prabang, about 20 miles north of the town. Following a scenic and comfortable boat ride along the Mekong, we will explore the fascinating mountain-top Pak Ou Caves, one of the most treasured religious symbols of the region, where over the years thousands of statues of Buddha have been deposited.

Throughout the day Matt and Andreea will guide you through photo opportunities available and offer as much tuition, support and feedback as you need.

Day 10: Luang Prabang

Depending on everyone’s onward travel plans, we have a few options for our last day.

In the morning after breakfast you have the opportunity to have feedback and review sessions with Matt and Andreea – these can be organised either as individual or group sessions. The aim will be to look at photographs taken during the trip and review these, giving tips for further editing / improvement for the future as desired. Of course, this is entirely optional and you can choose to spend the morning exploring some more of Luang Prabang or just chilling before your onward journey.

Alternatively, we can also organise a trip to nearby rice fields, this will be extra but one of the two photographers will come along and photography advice and feedback will be provided as needed. As there are 2 trainers available, we can always split the group depending on everyone’s preference. This is something we can decide the night before.
